Hywel Berry

Hi, I’m Hywel Berry, Founder of ScreenwritingJourney.com, and author of The Screenwriter’s Journey.

I started my writing career over 25 years ago and I have written for theater, film and television in the United States and England.

While studying for an MA in Film and Television I wrote an award winning play when I was 19 years old. Since then I have optioned and sold screenplays and TV pilots to companies such as the BBC and MTV. I have also been hired to write and rewrite screenplays by producers in London, New York and Hollywood.

Sounds pretty good, right? So do all resumes if you spend enough time writing them.

In reality, I spent 15 years struggling to kickstart my Hollywood writing career. I made money anywhere I could and I always had to work 9-5 jobs to pay the bills.

Everything above is true, and that’s a lot more than some writers ever achieve, but eventually I needed a job with a steady income.

So I began working as a public speaker and discovered that it was easier for me to speak to a room of 10,000 people than to write a screenplay that could actually make it into production in the studio system.

I have spent the last 10 years traveling the world speaking to Fortune 500 companies like Starbucks, Nike, and JP Morgan.

After being on stage I was regularly approached by people who were also trying to break in as a screenwriter. As I spoke to them I realized that they were falling into the same pitfalls, and making the same mistakes that I had made.

Eventually, I was able to look back and realize where I had gone wrong. I simply didn’t realize how treacherous the journey would be, and so I didn’t work hard enough. I thought that my natural talent as a writer would get me through.

A great script is a wonderful thing but for most of us it takes years before we write anything good enough to catch the attention of a top tier agent or a successful producer. And without constant marketing, networking and pitching, that killer script is worthless.

I started working one-on-one with these writers. I supported them in improving their scripts and their writing in general, but more importantly I helped to guide them on the treacherous journey into Hollywood.

Wanting to be of use to a wider range of writers, I founded ScreenwritingJourney.com to help any new screenwriter, no matter where they are in the world, and no matter how experienced, to get on the right path, and stay on that path to complete their journey to Hollywood as quickly as possible.
